Linda Johnson Rice joins Tesla board
July 19th, 2017
Tesla has named Chicago businesswoman Linda Johnson Rice to its corporate board.
The appointment is seen as a decisive move by the electric-car maker to diversify its board. Rice is African American and heads a media company.
News of Rice’s appointment comes on the heels of criticism by some shareholders who worried too many board members are closely tied to company CEO Elon Musk.
Musk’s cousin, who heads his Solar City company, for example, is on the board.
Rice is CEO of Ebony Media Operations and Chairman Emeritus of Ebony Media Holdings, the parent company for the Ebony magazine and Jet online brands. Tesla also added James Rupert Murdoch, CEO of 21st Century Fox to the board.
Rice isn’t the first Chicagoan on the board. Antonio Gracias, the founder of Valor Equity Partners, has been a long-time board member and counts Musk as a friend.
