Is governor’s race 2006 all over again?
July 19th, 2017
The divisiveness caused by the budget impasse is causing some in the GOP to have deja vu back to 2006.
That’s the year Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka won the Republican nomination to challenge incumbent Democrat Rod Blagojevich.
GOP contenders that year also included businessman Ron Gidwitz, dairyman Jim Oberweis and state Sen. Bill Brady. The primary was so bitter that Oberweis, now a state senator, balked at endorsing Topinka.
Topinka, who died a few years later, couldn’t convince voters that Republicans were unified.
Now some wonder if Gov. Bruce Rauner faces a similar predicament.
