Arne Duncan gets an assist from friends
May 4th, 2016
Two of Arne Duncan’s great loves came together last night–three if you count his friend John Rogers Jr.
Duncan, the former U.S. Secretary of Education, is passionate about education and basketball. So it was fitting that some notable stars of the NBA would show up at the OneGoal graduation gala that also honored Duncan. OneGoal is a Chicago nonprofit that guides and mentors under-served teens to get into college. The sold-out event this week was held at the Palmer House Hilton.
The event drew big names, including Earvin “Magic” Johnson, the NBA great who last year gave $1 million to OneGoal, and Dikembe Mutombo, another basketball star. Also attending was Rogers, a longtime friend of Duncan’s who played basketball while attending Princeton. Duncan and Rogers have been known–in the early days of President Barack Obama’s administration–to play basketball with the president. Rogers, chairman and CEO of Ariel Investments, also helped fund Obama’s campaigns.
Another lover of the game and supporter of education is Mesirow Financial’s Les Coney, whose son played in a presidential pick-up game, too.
Coney, also an Obama bundler and supporter of education causes, documented last night’s event on Facebook with this picture featuring Rogers, left, Duncan and himself.
