Outcry that these diamonds aren’t forever
May 20th, 2017
Some Streeterville residents are crying foul about plows digging up two baseball diamonds at Lake Shore Park.
“It was like the mayor taking over Meigs Field. It happened so fast, there wasn’t real community knowledge,” says Gail Shiner, a retired education administrator. She’s referring to former Mayor Richard M. Daley’s nighttime order to bulldoze an aviation field that once sat on Northerly Island.
Shiner and other neighbors say they didn’t hear about the latest park plans until it was too late.
But Ald. Brian Hopkins says the meetings have gone on for many months and that the consensus was to tear out the fields used for baseball and softball.
