Mayor Emanuel is headed to Milan
July 13th, 2017
Mayor Rahm Emanuel is headed to Italy. No word on his itinerary, but I hear he’ll meet with Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala.
Chicago’s Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans says Emanuel will meet with Sala and ask the Milan mayor to be an honorary grand marshall for the 2018 Columbus Day Parade. It will mark the 45th anniversary of Milan and Chicago teaming up for the Sister Cities program.
“It’s a milestone anniversary and we’re excited to be participating,” Enza Raineri, president of the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans, told me.
The trip comes on the heels of Emanuel promoting a new summer festival on Chicago’s Riverwalk. The August event will also promote Chicago’s sister cities—Milan is one of them.
Like Chicago, Milan’s waterways play an important role in that city’s culture. So it’s no surprise Emanuel would pay Sala a visit on his trip. Earlier this year, Sala was among 19 mayors from around the world who participated in a Chicago forum focused on urban waterways.
