Growing and pains at Gene & Georgetti
July 11th, 2017
It took 74 years for Gene & Georgetti to expand to a second location. That was a restaurant and events space in Rosemont two years ago. Now the Durpetti family, which owns the city’s oldest Italian steakhouse, is making plans to launch a new concept in a River North with historical significance—it’s at the site where Gene Michelotti would meet his wife, Ida.
You have to have strong elbows to survive in Chicago’s restaurant world, where you find “a steakhouse on every corner,” says Michelle Durpetti, co-managing partner of the restaurant.
She and her family aren’t afraid to use them.
They recently sent a cease and desist letter to a newly opened steakhouse that serves Italian steakhouse cuisine strikingly similar to Gene’s.
